DIVISION 11. - CHILDREN'S ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS EDUCATION COMMISSION


Sec. 2-150. - Commission established; membership.

(a)

Commission. There is hereby established a Children's Environmental Hazards Education Commission ("commission"). The membership of the commission shall be comprised of the following members: a representative of each of the five public school districts that are in the city; a representative of each college or university located in the city; and a representative of each private kindergarten, elementary, middle school or high school, or any alternative school, charter school, or other interested institution operating within the city. The chair of the commission shall be the chair of the city council's education committee. The membership shall also include the city's director of the department of youth and family services; the city council health committee chair; the youth and family services committee chair; and the director of the office of cable and communications. Each member of the commission may appoint a youth member from the organization which that member represents. Medical professionals and health care providers, as well as insurance company representatives, shall also be eligible for membership on the commission. The Wilmington River City Committee and the Urban Environmental Agency and any other environmental-related agency, including representatives from state and federal government organizations shall also be included as members of this commission.

(b)

Meetings. The commission shall meet at least quarterly and may adopt appropriate by-laws to conduct its meetings and business. Staff support to the commission shall be provided by the city department of planning.

(c)

Information. It is the intent of the city council that the commission shall provide general education to children throughout the city regarding environmental hazards. Such information shall be disseminated to the extent feasible through elementary and secondary schools and other educational institutions located within the city. The commission may also review developments at the federal, state and local levels, regarding environmental hazards and communication of information to the general public, as well as specifically to those in schools and educational institutions.
