5.72.010 Suitable clothing to be worn.

All employees are required to wear clothing suitable to their occupations as may be determined by their respective department heads. Employees shall furnish and maintain in suitable and appropriate condition such clothing and associated articles at their own expense except as otherwise expressly provided for in Ordinance 4099. 5.72.020 Clothing furnished by county--Illegal use prohibited.

Each department head shall be held personally responsible on his bond for all clothing issued to employees of his department in accordance with provisions of Ordinance 4099 when it has been found that such clothing has been used contrary to the provisions and the purposes as stated in Ordinance 4099. 5.72.030 Personal safety devices and protective apparel.

A. Employees shall be furnished personal safety devices or articles of protective apparel, or both, at county expense, when such apparel or devices are necessary to protect the health and safety of the employee at the work site. Requests for such apparel or devices must be approved by the director of personnel. Such personal safety devices and protective apparel shall be used or worn only when necessary in the course of county business and shall remain, at all times, the property of the county.
B. Neither “personal safety devices” nor “articles of protective apparel,” as used in this section, includes articles normally worn as everyday clothing.
C. This section does not supersede or modify any other provision of Ordinance 4099 or any other ordinance or department rule which requires employees at their own expense to furnish their own clothing, uniforms, or associated articles. 5.72.040 Uniforms--Issuance conditions generally.

Employees now or hereinafter employed in classifications specifically authorized by the board shall have issued to them on a one-time-only basis certain uniforms and equipment items required by their department head and approved by the board. Additionally, if specifically authorized by the board, such uniforms and equipment may be issued on a recurring basis or may be maintained by the county. The director of personnel shall periodically list such authorized classifications and approved items of uniform and equipment. When persons who have previously had issued to them such items pursuant to this section cease to be employed in a classification for which such uniforms and equipment are authorized, they may be required to return all or part of such uniforms and equipment. 5.72.050 Uniforms--Deputy sheriffs, security officers, and firefighters.

Persons employed in the items listed below shall be entitled to have issued to them certain items of initial uniform and equipment. Such issue shall be restricted to the initial equipping of newly hired persons and shall remain the property of the county until such a time as normal wear makes them valueless to the county. The chief executive officer shall annually list those items to be issued and the period of time that they must be used before being presumed to be valueless to the county.

5.72.052 Uniform allowance--Deputy clerk, custody officer.

Any person employed in a position of Deputy Clerk, Custody Officer (Item No. 2747) shall receive a lump-sum uniform allowance of $600.00 payable between December 1 and December 15 each year provided such person was employed in said position on November 1 of that calendar year. 5.72.053 Uniform allowance--Peace officers.

A. Any person employed in a position of Captain (Item No. 2721), Captain, DA (Item No. 2896), Commander (Item No. 2723), Detective (UC) (Item No. 9977), Detective (UC) (Item No. 9978), or Detective (UC) (Item No. 9980) shall be entitled to annual lump-sum payments as follows:
1. Effective March 1, 2005, a person employed on a position of Captain (Item No. 2721), Captain, DA (Item No. 2896), Commander (Item No. 2723), Detective (UC) (Item No. 9977) or Detective (UC) (Item No. 9980) shall receive a one-time only lump-sum uniform allowance supplement payment of $2,500.00;
2. Effective March 1, 2005, for persons employed on positions of Detective (UC) (Item No. 9978), paid in accordance with the provisions contained in Title 6, Chapter 6.08, Part 3 of the Los Angeles County Code, shall receive a one-time only lump-sum uniform allowance supplement payment of $2,500.00 upon departmental certification that such person’ s performance is "Met Expectations" or better;
3. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2005, and December 15, 2005, provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2005;
4. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2006 and December 15, 2006 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2006;
5. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2007 and December 15, 2007 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2007;
6. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2008 and December 15, 2008 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2008;
7. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2009 and December 15, 2009 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2009;
8. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2010 and December 15, 2010 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2010;
9. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2011 and December 15, 2011 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2011;

B. All payments made pursuant to this section shall be made by separate payroll warrant.
C. Any person employed in a position of Division Chief, Sheriff (UC) (Item No. 9968), Assistant Sheriff (UC) (Item 9969), Undersheriff (UC) (Item No. 9970), or Detective (UC) (Item No. 9979), shall be entitled to annual lump-sum payments as follows:
1. Effective March 1, 2005, persons employed in said positions, paid in accordance with the provisions contained in Title 6, Chapter 6.08, Part 3 of the Los Angeles County Code, shall receive a one-time only lump-sum uniform allowance supplement of $1,250.00 upon departmental certification that such person’s performance is "Met Expectations" or better;
2. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2005 and December 15, 2005, provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2005;
3. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2006, and December 15, 2006, provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2006;
4. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2007 and December 15, 2007 provided such person was employed in said position November 1, 2007;
5. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2008 and December 15, 2008 provided such person was employed in said position November 1, 2008;
6. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2009 and December 15, 2009 provided such person was employed in said position November 1, 2009;
7. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2010 and December 15, 2010 provided such person was employed in said position November 1, 2010.

5.72.060 Uniforms--Forester and fire warden employees.

A. In addition to all other compensation provided for in this Code, any person employed in a position set forth in Subsection 10 below shall be entitled to the following:
1. Effective March 1, 2005, a one-time only lump-sum payment of $2,500.00;
2. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2005 and December 15, 2005 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2005;
3. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2006 and December 15, 2006 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2006;
4. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2007 and December 15, 2007 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2007;
5. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2008 and December 15, 2008 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2008;
6. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2009 and December 15, 2009 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2009;
7. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2010 and December 15, 2010 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2010;
8. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2011 and December 15, 2011 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2011;
9. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2012 and December 15, 2012 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2012.
10. The provisions of this Subsection A shall apply to any person employed in one of the following classes provided such person’s performance is "Competent" or better or, in the case of persons paid in accordance with the provisions of Title 6, Chapter 6.08, Part 3 of this Code, "Met Expectations" or better:

1. Effective March 1, 2005, a one-time only lump-sum payment of $1,250.00;
2. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2005 and December 15, 2005 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2005;
3. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2006 and December 15, 2006 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2006;
4. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2007 and December 15, 2007 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2007;
5. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2008 and December 15, 2008 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2008;
6. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2009 and December 15, 2009 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2009;
7. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2010 and December 15, 2010 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2010;
8. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2011 and December 15, 2011 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2011;
9. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2012 and December 15, 2012 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2012.
10. 5.72.070 Uniforms--Custodians.

Persons employed in custodian and window-washing positions shall be entitled to have issued to them uniforms consisting of shirts and slacks. Such uniforms shall be rented or purchased by the county, and shall be laundered at no expense to the employee. Such uniforms shall be returned to the department upon completion of active duty for the county, and at such times as may be required by the department head. 5.72.080 Uniform--Lifeguards.

A. Swimming trunks. Employees in beach and pool lifeguard classifications shall be entitled to have swimming trunks issued to them and maintained at no expense to the employees. Such swimming trunks shall be returned to the department which issued them when the employee is not assigned to lifeguard duties or at such times as may be required by the lifeguard’s department head.
B. Department of parks and recreation. In addition to all other compensation provided for in this Code, any person employed in the position of Lake Aquatics Manager (Item No. 2959) or in the position of Chief Lake Lifeguard (Item No. 2960) shall be entitled to the following:
1. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2005, and December 15, 2005, provided such person was employed in one of said positions on November 1, 2005;
2. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2006, and December 15, 2006, provided such person was employed in one of said positions on November 1, 2006;
3. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2007, and December 15, 2007, provided such person was employed in one of said positions on November 1, 2007;
4. $1,000 payable between December 1, 2008, and December 15, 2008, provided such person was employed in one of said positions on November 1, 2008;
5. $1,000 payable between December 1, 2009, and December 15, 2009, provided such person was employed in one of said positions on November 1, 2009;
6. $1,000 payable between December 1, 2010, and December 15, 2010, provided such person was employed in one of said positions on November 1, 2010;
7. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2011 and December 15, 2011, provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2011;
8. $1,000.00 payable between December 1, 2012 and December 15, 2012, provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2012.
9. The provisions of this Subsection B shall only apply if such person’s performance is "Competent" or better. 5.72.090 Uniforms--Parking lot attendants.

Persons assigned as parking lot attendants at Los Angeles County parking lots where fees are charged shall be entitled to have issued to them uniforms consisting of shirts and slacks. Such uniforms shall be rented or purchased by the county and shall be laundered at no expense to the employee. Such uniforms shall be returned to the department upon completion of active duty for the county, and at such other times as may be required by the department head. 5.72.100 Laundry of uniforms and clothing.

A. Employees in institutions and laboratories of the county who are required to wear washable uniforms in the performance of their duties shall be entitled to have such uniforms laundered at no expense to themselves.
B. Employees receiving full maintenance shall be entitled to have their personal clothing laundered at no expense to themselves. (Ord. 7981 § 7, 1961: Ord. 4099 Art. 3-C § 93.50.2, 1942.)

5.72.300 Clothing allowance--Probation Officers.

A. Persons employed as Assistant Head Transportation Deputy, Probation (Item No. 8629) or Head Transportation Deputy, Probation (Item No. 8630), whose performance is "Competent" or better, shall be entitled to the following:
1. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2007 and December 15, 2007 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2007;
2. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2008 and December 15, 2008 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2008;
3. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2009 and December 15, 2009 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2009;
4. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2010 and December 15, 2010 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2010;
5. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2011 and December 15, 2011 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2011;
6. $500.00 payable between December 1, 2012 and December 15, 2012 provided such person was employed in said position on November 1, 2012.
